LE ACCUSE

 

Jordan Chandler fu il primo ragazzo ad accusare Michael Jackson di molestie sessuali. I due si incontrarono per la prima volta ad un autonoleggio di proprietà di Dave Schwartz, il secondo marito di June Chandler, la madre di Jordan. L’auto di Michael Jackson si era rotta e Dave aveva chiamato sua moglie affinché portasse Jordan in ufficio, considerato che il ragazzo era un ammiratore di Jackson. Michael divenne amico del ragazzo e Jordan insieme a sua madre iniziò a girare il mondo con Jackson. Inizialmente il padre di Jordan, Evan Chandler, accolse con gioia l’amicizia del figlio con Micael Jackson, permettendo persino al cantante di soggiornare a casa sua. Evan Chandler era un dentista ma aspirava a diventare uno sceneggiatore. Così Michael poteva essere un potenziale sponsor per i suoi sogni. Ma quando Jordan iniziò a saltare i weekend programmati per stare con suo padre, Evan divenne geloso dell’affetto che Jordan nutriva per Michael. Era arrabbiato e vide l’opportunita’ di fare soldi. Durante una conversazione telefonica registrata da Dave Schwartz, Evan rivelo’ il suo piano: “Lui (riferendosi a Michael) ha distrutto la famiglia. Il ragazzo è stato sedotto dal potere e dal denaro di questo tizio…Sono preparato a procedere contro Michael Jackson. E’ già tutto pronto. Ci sono altre persone coinvolte, che stanno in certe posizioni, che stanno aspettando una mia chiamata. Li ho pagati per farlo. Tutto sta andando secondo un piano che non è solo mio. Una volta fatta quella chiamata, questo tizio distruggerà chiunque in vista in qualunque modo subdolo, maligno, crudele egli possa. Ed io gli ho dato piena autorità per farlo.”

In accordo con quanto Geraldine Hughes scrive nel suo libro Redemption (n.d.T. Redenzione), il 4 agosto 1993 Evan e Jordan Chandler incontrarono Michael Jackson e l’investigatore privato Anthony Pellicano in una camera del Westwood Marquis Hotel. Evan chiese 20 milioni di dollari a Michael Jackson per non rendere pubbliche le sue accuse di molestie su minore. Ma Michael si rifiutò di pagare. Così alcune informazioni trapelarono ai media e un rapporto per abuso sessuale su minore venne inviato al Dipartimento per la Tutela dell’Infanzia. Michael era a Bangkok, Tailandia, per il suo Tour Dangerous, quando il Dipartimento di Polizia di Los Angeles eseguì un mandato di perquisizione del Neverland Ranch e dell’appartamento a Century City e iniziò a interrogare amici, dipendenti ed ex-dipendenti di Michael. Il 14 settembre 1993 l’avvocato di Chandler depositò una causa da 30 milioni di dollari alla Suprema Corte di Los Angeles contro Michael Jackson. I media si scatenarono e Michael iniziò ad abusare di farmaci da prescrizione al fine di sopportare le false accuse. Nel mese di novembre fu portato in una clinica di riabilitazione nel Regno Unito e il tour Dangerous fu interrotto. Il 22 dicembre 1993 Michael Jackson parlò al mondo rilasciando una dichiarazione in diretta televisiva dal suo Neverland Ranch, informando milioni di persone in tutto il mondo di essere stato sottoposto ad una perizia corporea su richiesta del Dipartimento dello Sceriffo della Contea di Santa Barbara, durante la quale erano state scattate foto di tutto il suo corpo, genitali compresi. Michael definì questa azione “disumanizzante, la più umiliante traversia della mia vita” e aggiunse di aver sopportato questa umiliazione perché questo avrebbe provato la sua innocenza. I suoi avvocati, preoccupati della salute di Michael, decisero di risolvere il caso pagando circa 20 milioni di dollari. Evan Chandler ricevette 1 o 2 milioni di dollari, il resto fu depositato in un fondo per il ragazzo vincolato fino al raggiungimento dei 18 anni e sotto la tutela di un giudice. L’accordo permise a Michael di andare avanti con la sua vita e carriera, ma suonò alle orecchie della stampa e dei suoi detrattori come un’ammissione di colpa.

La rabbia e la sete di giustizia di Michael trovarono sfogo nei testi delle canzoni dell’album HiStory, in cui attacca pesantemente il sistema. Il suo impegno umanitario e il suo attivismo sociale aumentarono, continuando anche a dedicare la propria attenzione ai bambini del mondo e alle problematiche dell’infanzia. Continuò ad ospitare famiglie, scolaresche e bambini malati a Neverland, nulla per Michael era cambiato. Ma proprio la sua filantropia lo portò a prendersi cura nel 2002 di un ragazzino di 10 anni, Gavin Arvizo, malato di cancro al quarto stadio, al quale, secondo i medici, non rimanevano più di 3 mesi di vita. Jackson lo accolse insieme alla sua famiglia a casa sua, dove il ragazzo proseguì le cure. Gavin sopravvisse al cancro, ma nel 2003 testimoniò di fronte al Procuratore della Contea di Santa Barbara Thomas Sneddon (lo stesso che condusse le indagini sul caso Chandler) di essere stato molestato da Jackson. 14 i capi d’imputazione contestati al cantante per un totale di 18 anni di carcere: tra questi comparivano quello di molestie sessuali ai danni di minore e la somministrazione a minore di bevande alcoliche al fine di abusarne. L’intera tenuta di Neverland venne messa a soqquadro da 80 agenti di polizia alla ricerca di prove. Jackson si consegnò alla polizia, subì l’onta delle manette e affrontò il processo penale. 135 i testimoni che deposero in tribunale, 80 dei quali portati dalla sola Procura. Costretto a presenziare in aula tutti i giorni per sei mesi, a pena la revoca della libertà su cauzione, Michael uscì da questa esperienza consumato e devastato nel profondo. I media e al seguito l’opinione pubblica l’avevano già condannato, ma i testimoni e le prove portate al processo dalla Procura di Santa Barbara si dimostrarono inconcludenti e addirittura false. Michael Jackson venne assolto da tutti i capi di imputazione perché i fatti non sussistevano. Bensì la Sig.ra Arvizo, la mamma dell’accusatore, venne condannata per frode nei confronti dei servizi sociali. All'assoluzione di Michael Jackson la stragrande maggioranza della stampa non diede il giusto risalto, sarebbe stato come ammettere il linciaggio mediatico di cui si erano macchiati. In questo modo non venne permessa una completa, quanto mai doverosa, riabilitazione dell’immagine pubblica dell’artista e dell’uomo Michael.

THE ALLEGATIONS

 

Jordan Chandler was the first boy who accused Michael Jackson of molestation in 1993. MJ first met JC at a Rent-A-Wreck car rental agency, owned by Dave Schwartz, the second husband of June Chandler, who is Jordan’s mother. MJ car was broken down and Dave had called his wife to bring Jordan, a fan of Michael’s, to the office. Michael and the boy became friends and Jordan and his mom started to trip all around the world with MJ. Initially Evan Chandler, Jordan’s father, welcomed his son’ s friendship with MJ, even allowing Michael Jackson to stay at his house. Evan Chandler was a dentist but he aspired to be a screenplay writer. So MJ could be a potential sponsor for his dreams. But when Jordan began missing the scheduled weekends with his father, Evan became jealous over his son’s affection towards Michael. He was angry and saw an opportunity to make money. During a phone conversation recorded by Dave Schwartz, Evan revealed his plot: “He (MJ) broke up the family. The boy has been seduced by this guy’s power and money….I’m prepared to move against MJ. It’s already set. There are other people involved that are waiting for my phone call that are in certain positions. I’ve paid them to do it. Everything’s going according a certain plan that isn’t just mine. Once I make that phone call, this guy is going to destroy everybody in sight in any devious, nasty, cruel way that he can do it. And I’ve given him full authority to do that.”

According to Geraldine Hughes in her book Redemption, on August 4, 1993 Evan and Jordan Chandler met Michael Jackson and Anthony Pellicano, a private investigator, in a suite of the Westwood Marquis Hotel. Evan demanded 20 million dollars from MJ in exchange for not going public with his allegations of child molestation. But MJ refused to pay the 20 millions demanded. So some information leaked to the media and a child sexual abuse report was sent to the Department of Children’s Services. Michael was in Bangkok, Thailand, during his Dangerous Tour when the LA Police Department served a search warrant on Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch and Century City condo and they began to interrogate Michael’s friends, family, employees and former employees. On September 14, 1993, Chandler’s attorney filed a thirty million dollar lawsuit in the LA Superior Court against MJ. The media went wild and Michael started to abuse prescription drugs in order to bear the false allegations. On the month of November he was taken to a clinic in UK to clean himself and the Dangerous Tour was stopped. On December 22, 1993, Michael Jackson spoke to the world in a statement broadcast live from his Neverland Ranch, informing millions of people worldwide of how he had been subjected to a body search, demanded by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department, where they took pictures of all his body, including his genitals. Michael called this action “dehumanizing, the most humiliating ordeal of my life” and added that he endured this humiliation so it would prove his innocence. His attorneys, worried about Michael’s health, decided to settle this case paying approximately 20 million dollars. Evan Chandler received 1 or 2 million dollars and the balance of the money was put in a trust fund for the boy until he reached the age of 18 and a judge was appointed guardian over his estate. The settlement allowed Michael to move on with his life and career, but it sounded as an admission of guilt to media and detractors.

Michael screamed his anger and thirst for justice through the lyrics of the HIStory songs, in which he was down on the system. His humanitarian efforts and social activism increased. He also kept on directing his attention to the children’s world and problems. He kept on hosting families, school children and sick children at Neverland Ranch. Nothing had changed for Michael. And his philanthropy, in 2002, led Michael to take care of Gavin Arvizo, a 10 years old boy suffering from a IV stage cancer. Doctors had said that he could still live for only three months. Jackson hosted him together with his mom and siblings at Neverland, where the boy carried on with his therapy. Gavin won his battle against cancer, but in 2003 he gave testimony about having been molested by Jackson to Thomas Sneddon, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff who investigated during the Chandler case. 14 charges were notified to the singer for a 18 years imprisonment. Among the charges there were child molestation and alcohol administration to a child in order to commit abuse. The entire Neverland Ranch was turned upside down by 80 policemen looking for evidences. Jackson gave himself up, was handcuffed and faced the criminal trial. 135 witnesses testified during the trial, 80 were called to testify by the DA’s office. Michael Jackson was forced to attend in courtroom everyday for six months, at the risk of bail being revoked, and he was consumed and deeply devastated by this experience. Media and public opinion had already condemned him, but the State’s witnesses and evidences were proved inconclusive and even false. Michael Jackson was acquitted of all charges because the facts didn’t subsist. But rather Mrs Arvizo, accuser’s mother, was convicted of fraud towards social services. The great majority of the media didn’t highlight Michael Jackson’s acquittal, it would have meant admitting the media lynching, which they were guilty of. So there never was a complete, highly due, rehabilitation of Michael Jackson, the entertainer and the man.
